How to treat skin blemishes caused by stress

Skin blemishes caused by stress: symptoms and treatment

Skin care routines, hydration, sun protection. Are you taking all these steps and skill, failing to avoid blemishes brought on by stress? We are all aware of the care needed to keep your skin looking radiant, but our fast-paced lifestyle can cause anxiety and, sooner or later, our skin starts showing the signs of this.

Skin is the biggest organ in our entire body and is particularly sensitive to our emotions and mood. Specifically, when you are feeling stressed, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that causes the appearance of blemishes and acne.

But, how can you identify blemishes caused by stress? Although they might look the same, you mustn’t mistake skin hyperpigmentation caused by the son, in other words, dark blemishes that appear over the years and that can be treated with products like Bioderma Sebium Kerato+ Anti-Blemish, Anti-Marks Gel Cream. Skin blemishes caused by stress are redder in colour and suddenly appear anywhere on your body (although they tend to appear on the limbs, face, and chest). The difference with blemishes brought on by the sun is that they are itchy and feel more like a flare-up than a blemish. In fact, they tend to be treated with antihistamines to alleviate the itchy feeling.

In addition to blemishes brought on by nerves, stress can trigger other reactions in your skin that you might have to deal with and whose cause remains unknown. These include:

  • Perspiration: skin blemishes caused by stress are not the only signal that you need to slow down. Excess perspiration may be another symptom, and you can detect this as in these cases, the smell is stronger.
  • Dandruff: also caused by an increase in cortisol, your scalp is drier, and this causes greater amounts of dandruff.
  • Hair loss and alopecia: in extreme cases of stress, you may experience massive hair loss.
  • Hives: usually accompanied by an itching, burning or stinging sensation in the area they appear.

Ways to alleviate skin blemishes caused by stress

Firstly, if you feel your stress levels soaring and your skin is suffering, visit your doctor so that specific medication can be prescribed to you. Furthermore, you can complement this with treatment at home that will help to prevent the appearance of these blemishes.

To treat skin blemishes brought on by stress, including on your face, there is a series of habits that you can follow to improve its texture and appearance. Grab a pencil!

  1. Hygiene must always be your priority: your skin needs to be clean in order to breathe and regenerate itself. Like we always say, choose products that are best suited to your skin type, and for the areas in which blemishes appear, choose a smooth cleanser that does not irritate your skin, but that removes the oil produced by your skin.
  2. Hydrate your skin: hydration keeps your skin healthy, and if you also use a moisturising regenerative cream, you can enhance the natural barrier of your skin to prevent skin blemishes from reappearing.
  3. Hydrate your body from within: water helps to eliminate toxins, also caused by stress, and therefore it helps to keep you feeling much healthier. Your skin will thank you!
  4. Switch to herbal teas: some herbal teas, like linden, camomile and valerian teas help you to relax, which is also essential in preventing skin blemishes caused by stress. What's more, they also hydrate you, making them undoubly effective!
  5. Participate in sport: not only will this help to improve your physical condition but will also help you to release any tension you build up in your mind. Walk, run, swim, do yoga… Anything goes provided that you get your body moving.
  6. Sleep well: between 7 and 8 hours is recommended to ensure your body is properly rested. Sleeping properly helps to prevent many secondary effects, and in large part stress can be caused when you fail to get enough rest, so make sure you don’t neglect this critical factor, as it may take its toll on you.

If you suffer from stress, you’ll be aware it can crop up at any time, so make sure you manage these emotions and prevent blemishes caused by stress or other symptoms from appearing on your skin. We encourage you to dedicate more time to yourself and things that help you to relax, so that both your body and your mind remain balanced and healthy.
